Independent developer Flying Wild Hog (Hard Reset) and rogue game publisher Devolver Digital (Serious Sam 3: BFE, Hotline Miami, LUFTRAUSERS) are thrilled to announce their collaboration on Shadow Warrior, a complete reimagining of the 1997 3D Realms cult classic. Shadow Warrior is a bold new vision of the 1997 cult classic, reimagined with a blend of modern design, inventive combat mechanics, and a contemporary retelling of Lo Wang’s comical rise to legend.

“The team here at Flying Wild Hog are longtime fans of the original Shadow Warrior with its unique combat innovations and distinct setting not seen in shooters at that time,” said Michal Szustak, Studio Head at Flying Wild Hog. “The classic arcade-style shooter is a genre we genuinely love, so redesigning the world of Shadow Warrior and the character of Lo Wang has been a fantastic project for the team.”

Shadow Warrior tells the offbeat tale of Zilla Enterprise’s corporate shogun, Lo Wang, who is ordered by his employer to track down and acquire a legendary blade known as the Nobitsura Kage. Forced into a timeless battle, Lo Wang learns of the blade’s connection to ancient gods from another realm, pushing our world to the brink of destruction. Aided by Hoji, a banished spirit from this mysterious world, Lo Wang must use a masterful combination of gun, blade, magic and wit to discover the truth behind the demonic invasion and banish the encroaching forces back into the darkness.

“If you read this far you should know that you tangle with twin female assassins and slice off demon heads to use as weapons,” said Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker. “It’s super fucking rad.”

Shadow Warrior is set to launch on PC via Steam and other digital download service this fall with next-gen console release in 2014.
Kyoto, Japan – Independent video game label Devolver Digital and global conglomerate Zilla Enterprises have announced a strategic partnership to bring sword collection software Blade Analyzer Pro to a worldwide audience via the Steam digital distribution service.

Originally developed for private use by Zilla Enterprises founder and renown sword collector Orochi Zilla, Blade Analyzer Pro uses your PC’s camera to scan any sword or knife in your collection and cross-reference it with a robust database of blades to analyze and identify any item in your collection. Users can then organize their collection by sword type, period of use, price, and rarity to create a customized online catalog to share with other sword collectors around the world.

“The curators of my private collection have used a form of this software for several years in an effort to help me throuroughly catalog and complete my collection,” said Orochi Zilla, founder and chairman of Zilla Enterprises. “It’s my personal hope that the widespread use this more consumer-friendly version of the software will help me find and acquire some of the more rare blades that have eluded me over the years.”

The first private beta of Blade Analyzer Pro is currently underway with some of the world’s top private sword collectors and historiacal musuems. The final release version of Blade Analyzer Pro is set to launch Fall 2013 on PC and is currently up on Steam Greenlight for review and discussion.

So here’s how you can help: setup a camera at the end of a long, moody hallway (see below) and find your self an animal mask and your melee weapon of choice - like a bat, crowbar, etc. Then film yourself walking down the hallway menacingly and as you get to the camera take a swing similar to the example below but please, please, please don’t hit your camera and break it. The closer you can keep it composed and framed like the example below, the easier it will be on our super handsome editors! The clip only needs to be 5 to 10 seconds or so as we are going to just use a little bit of it to put together with clips from other folks.

We’ve even put together an example shot below so everyone can better light, frame, and compose the scenes to match and our editors can make something the flows together nicely.

Once you are done email a download link to hlm@devolverdigital.com, tweet it to @DevolverDigital or post it to YouTube and send us a link to it so we can rip it ourselves. We’re taking entires through May 15th so hop on it!

That’s it. Let’s make something awesome.

Making it Rain (with Steam Coupons)

This week we starting sending discount coupons to the Steam inventories of our fans to thank them for their support and help cross promote with both our games and other indie games.

The first is a historical milestone in “digital cross-promotional discount technology” as anyone that purchased Serious Sam 3: BFE through Steam will receive a discount code for Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition and vice versa. We thought that people that love old-school badasses might also like other old-school badasses.

For the second coupon we partnered with Eighty Eight games to offer a coupon for their awesome game 10000000 for anyone that bought our beloved Dungeon Hearts through Steam and in turn anyone that owns 10000000 received a coupon for Dungeon Hearts! Unique RPGs ahoy!

If this works well (and so far it’s been outstanding) we plan on doing this periodically to help spread the word and share the wealth! Thanks again for all your support and we can’t wait to share what’s next from Devolver Digital!

*Updated to note that coupons are awarded to those who purchased the games through Steam.

Best Email Ever?

The following is an actual email sent to Devolver Digital. Needless to say a Hotline Miami download key was awarded within mere seconds.

_____________________________________________________

Hello,

I come from a small village under the sea. I come to you today for two raisons, but I will only tell you one. I hope you can live with that.

I wanted to make a trade with you. Currently I have a virtual dog named Jack Seen here :

He’s the one in the front. The one photobombing him is named Eric, and he’s a piece of shit kid, though he can’t be blamed because his parents got divorced (Always stay together for the kids).

Jack is the head of his class, and I believe he is the GOAT (Greatest of all time). He should be certainly worthy of a trade.

I am willing to trade you this virtual pet, wich I have linked. In exchange I would like a Steam Key for Hotline Miami. Eric being a piece of shit ate my credit card.

In any event, if you would like to accept the trade for this virtual dog please send me a Steam key for the game. If not, please return my virtual dog by repling with it.

Thanks for you time.

Update: Dennis Wedin from Dennaton Games made some virtual dog food for the dogs. :P

Cube Roots and Devolver Digital have thrown down the gauntlet for puzzle game fans around the world and unleashed the spectacularly vibrant Dungeon Hearts on PC, Mac, and iPad. Devolver Digital’s newest indie release blends the strategic battle mechanics of a traditional JPRG with the frantic pace of a match-three puzzle game to create an imaginative and challenging experience unlike anything else. Combine dozens of different runes along the relentlessly flowing Fatestream and unleash powerful attacks and devastating combos on a colorful cast of foes. Strategy and speed are essential in conquering the Dark One as you build up your heroic team’s abilities and unlock special attacks and magical spells in this truly unique adventure.

“The term ‘unique’ is probably the most overused word in marketing copy for games, so Dungeon Hearts was a challenge to myself to create something that actually lived up to the word,” said Cube Roots founder Chris Pavia.

Developer Cube Roots has worked over the past year to expand and refine Dungeon Hearts to create a truly extraordinary experience that will challenge even the most savvy puzzle fan.

“If there’s one thing I like more than getting drunk and signing a game at GDC it’s getting drunk and signing a super awesome game at GDC,” said Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker when reached for comment.

Dungeon Hearts is available now for PC and Mac via Steam and other digital services as well as iPad 2+ on the Apple App Store for $2.99.

Independent developer Cube Roots and the devastatingly handsome gents of Devolver Digital have announced the match-three puzzler Dungeon Hearts will launch for $2.99 on PC and Mac via Steam and other digital PC services as well as iPad via the Apple App Store. Dungeon Hearts, the debut outing by Cube Roots, challenges players to combine dozens of different runes along the relentlessly flowing Fatestream and unleash powerful attacks and devastating combos on a colorful cast of foes. Strategy and speed are essential in conquering the Dark One as you build up your heroic team’s abilities and unlock special attacks and magical spells.

“Working on Dungeon Hearts over the last year has been an amazing journey, and I’m thankful to have had opportunities most indies don’t get on their first project. As the artist, designer, and programmer on the game I couldn’t have found a better publisher than Devolver Digital, who have allowed me to pursue my creative vision,” said Cube Roots founder Chris Pavia. “Also, their skill at making shady backroom deals and leveraging sexual favors to get Dungeon Hearts on Steam has proven to be an invaluable learning experience.”

“The team is super excited to see what sort of crazy combinations of weapons Serious Sam fans put together with the Gunstacker,” said Mommy’s Best Games founder Nathan Fouts, “We’ve put a ton of work into new content and have really cranked up the insanity in Serious Sam Double D XXL.”

Originally launched as a part of the Serious Sam Indie Series, Serious Sam Double D XXL is a 2D run-and-gun take on the iconic Serious Sam franchise centered around the revolutionary Gunstacker – an item that allows gamers to collect, stack, and fire dozens of different gun combinations all at once. The addition of couch co-op, new levels, new weapons, and a bizarre selection of new enemies have all been added to reach an absolutely explosive level of fun on XBLA.

Serious Sam Double D XXL is available now on Xbox LIVE Arcade for 800 MS Points.

“I have no idea why we aren’t focusing our marketing on the topless female enemies holding bombs over their exposed breasts,” said Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker. “If I’ve learned anything from years selling video games, it’s that nudity and violence move product.”

Independent developer Dennaton Games and rogue game publisher Devolver Digital have announced that the award-winning Hotline Miami will arrive on the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) and PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita) this coming spring. Crashing onto the scene last fall, Hotline Miami grabbed the attention of gamers all over the world with stylish sights and sounds, tough as nails gameplay, and a perplexing narrative that garnered Dennaton Games’ debut effort awards and nominations from nearly every video game media outlet. Hotline Miami has gone on to sell over 300,000 units on PC and solidified its place amongst the best releases of 2012.

“Our team have been fans of Hotline Miami from the very start and we are absolutely thrilled to have such a brilliant game launch on the PlayStation platform,” said Shahid Ahmad, Senior Business Development Manager, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE). “The intense visuals and pulsing soundtrack are perfectly suited for PS3 and PS VIta and we can’t wait for PlayStation fans to see what Hotline Miami is all about.”

Dutch developer Abstraction Games has been appointed to deliver Hotline Miami’s trademark style and gameplay to both PS3 and PS Vita via PlayStation®Network under the guidance of Dennaton Games. Hotline Miami will also launch with Cross-Buy allowing gamers to play Hotline MIami on both PS3 and PS Vita with a single purchase. Boom.

“The Devolver Digital team is hyped to see Hotline Miami hit PS3 and PS Vita,” said Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker. “However, this Cross-Buy thing might prohibit me from achieving my long-standing dream of wearing a gold plated PS Vita around my neck. Total bummer.”

Austin, TX – Fork Parker, Devolver Digital’s infamous Chief Financial Officer and taco connoisseur, is once again sending his minions to the Game Developers Conference and SXSW in search of the finest ideas in independent game development as a part of this year’s Pitch Fork Parker initiative. Devolver Digital, curators of exquisitely handcrafted video games, provide independent studios with development funding, top-notch marketing and public relations resources, and a genuine partnership to help make a great video game something of legend - all while allowing the developer to maintain complete creative freedom on the project.

The inaugural Pitch Fork Parker initiative at GDC 2012 resulted in Devolver Digital signing the upcoming RPG-influenced puzzle game Dungeon Hearts for PC, Mac, and iOS by Chris Pavia.

“Devolver Digital has given me opportunities that would have been nearly impossible to get on my own as a new, unknown developer,” said Pavia. “Dungeon Hearts wouldn’t be half the game it is now without their support. Also, they give the best back rubs.”

The Devolver Digital team has maintained a strong and non-sexual loving relationship with many talented independent developers over multiple titles - a testament to their belief in forging genuine and honest partnerships with their developers.

“Devolver Digital once got me a hotel room with zebra print walls & breakfast tacos,” added JW Nijman, one half of Dutch developer Vlambeer.

“I was under the impression that being ‘developer friendly’ just meant buying them dinner, drinks, and possibly a sensual massage,” said Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker. “But our business development team is more in favor of honesty, integrity, and creative freedom so…you know…whatever.”

Grab a rocket launcher and step out from the cowardice of cover-systems to experience the brutal fun as Serious Sam battles through overwhelming hordes of imaginative monsters and puts the “shoot” back in “first-person shooter.” Gamers will be also be able to crank up the holiday cheer with custom Santa-themed skins in the legendary madness of Serious Sam campaign co-op and a variety of white-knuckle multiplayer versus modes.

While these serious holiday discounts will most likely usher in peace on Earth and possibly even good will toward men, not everyone is pleased with the promotion.

“I’m all for peace on earth and good will toward men but this is ridiculous,” said Fork Parker, noted humbug and CFO of Devolver Digital CFO. “Looks like once again I’ll be sipping unicorn eggnog from my platinum chalice and watch my potential wealth be slashed in half by the marketing department’s penchant for charity.”

Our friend Chris Pavia at Cube Roots as been working his butt off for over a year now and soon we’ll all have a chance to play his amazing new game, Dungeon Hearts! The super rad match-three puzzle game/RPG hybrid is hitting beta and we’re working with Mr. Pavia on plans for rolling out and launching Dungeon Hearts on PC, Mac, mobile and even some other secret platforms in early 2013!

One thing that we’re really geeked up about is the nice new main menu and bestiary that details all the heroes, enemies, and gems. Also, loving some of the new sound effects work and some of the different soundtrack options are fantastic!

Users are now able to browse and subscribe to their favorite mods created by fellow Serious Sam fans to change up weapons, enemies, and gameplay as well as add in new fan-made multiplayer and survival maps. In fact, there will be over 60 different mods already available for users to subscribe to and enjoy!

Croteam has prepared a wiki guide for this new feature HERE.

This massive influx of awesome might prove intimidating to current users so we’ve prepared a handy FAQ to prepare for this new feature.

Q: I love the Rocket Launcher but think it would be great to replace it with a pet Scrapjack that fires cute little rockets from the palm of my hand – is this possible with Steam Workshop support?

A: Already in there boss, don’t forget to check out it’s precious little idle animation.

Q: The Gnaar enemies scare my little brother, would it be possible to dress them up with fancy top hats and monocles with maybe a distinguished mustache? If so, can we rename them Sir Eisenhower Buttersworth?

A: Yes. So much yes.

Q: The non-stop action of Serious Sam 3: BFE is great and all but I really wish I could replace my multiplayer character with oddly attractive teenage girls from my favorite anime, is that weird?

A: Yes, it is weird but also totally possible with Steam Workshop. By the time you read this I guarantee your request is already available.

Q: I bet my friend $1,000,000 that you will never, ever, ever be able to make your own multiplayer and survival maps for Serious Sam 3: BFE using Steam Workshop. What’s the deal?

A: You owe your friend a million bucks, dude.

Q: I get aroused by the rapid discharge of shotgun shells – is there already an automatic shotgun mod I can download so I don’t have to wait on making my own?

A: Yes. Please go away. Gross.

Devolver Digital Costume Contest

It’s that wonderful time of the year again when cosplay becomes the more prevalent and homemade Luigi costumes rule the night. The team at Devolver Digital wants to see your best costumes from our games so we’re running a little Halloween costume contest!

WHAT: Devolver Digital Costume Contest

WHEN: Now through November 1

WHERE: Post your Serious Sam or Hotline Miami related costume to the Devolver Digital Facebook fan page or tweet @DevolverDigital, @SeriousSamIAm, or @HotlineMiami!

WHY: The best costumes as voted by the Devolver Digital crew will win downloads of every game we’ve launched. All Serious Sam, Hotline Miami, and we’ll even send you Luftrausers when it launches!

BUT: If you aren’t planning to dress up this Halloween feel free to stay home and try out some Serious Sam 3 on Xbox LIVE Arcade or Hotline Miami!

Serious Sam 3 on Xbox LIVE Arcade - The Warfighter-fighter

During this busy season of video game releases the team at Devolver Digital realize that not every game will live up to expectations. One such game has been Medal of Honor: Warfighter - yet another military shooter where cover is king and most folks spend their time peeking out form behind a wall or a strategically placed concrete barrier.

That shit is weak.

That’s why we’re pleased to announce the Serious Sam3: BFE “Warfighter-fighter” program. Over the next week we will be offering 100 free Xbox LIVE Arcade downloads for Serious Sam 3: BFE to some of those affected so they can get up from behind that wall and get back to the unleashing heavy ordinance upon a horde of brutal aliens just like our forefathers.

Stand up and make your voice heard by simply tweeting your concerns about the stagnant modern military shooter with the hashtag #SeriousSam3XBLA and you’ll be entered for a chance to win a Serious Sam 3 download - the perfect remedy for mundane, cover-based shooters.

For those that avoid Twitter at all costs you can also post the same to the Serious Sam Facebook page at facebook.com/SeriousSamFan.

Spread the word and stay serious!
